Digital transformation – opportunities and possibilities

With the end of mainstream maintenance for core Business Suite 7 applications announced for 2027, the vast majority of businesses are planning to move to the successor product, SAP S/4HANA. This means organizations will need to face the challenge of migration in the next while as core areas and value creation processes are affected. Digital transformation, however, also presents potential for rethinking business processes and making them future proof and sustainable, especially where supply chain management is concerned.

Rethinking processes and making them future proof with 4flow’s transformation expertise

Supply chains are becoming increasingly complex, resulting in very large amounts of data and a steadily increasing flow of information between involved parties. At the same time, it is important to map all processes efficiently in order to enable the speed, flexibility and transparency required. On top of that, processes must be managed in real time, so that every supply chain stakeholder is fully informed and can make decisions at any time. Process reliability is important in order to guarantee on-time delivery and customer satisfaction.

Roadmap for S/4HANA supply chain transformation

With the new ERP suite S/4HANA, SAP is responding to these requirements. The core of S/4HANA is in-memory technology, which allows business data to be analyzed in real time. Important supply chain management components such as extended warehouse management or transportation management are integrated as modules. The SAP Fiori user interface provides a user experience for business applications that is comparable to consumer apps.

Regardless of whether the migration to S/4HANA is intended as a technical upgrade or as a business transformation: The question is not whether or why SAP customers should switch to S/4HANA, but when and how. The requirements for a transformation to SAP S/4HANA are manifold. The prerequisites for digital transformation often need to first be created. At the same time, the following questions pop up: What strategies, approaches and priorities are required? What are the resulting challenges?

Greenfield or Brownfield

These two methods determine how old data, systems and structures are handled. In the greenfield approach, the system is completely rebuilt and no existing system structures are carried over. Brownfield conversion or system conversion includes the upgrade of the existing system to SAP S/4HANA – with 90% of the code base retained.

Reduce complexity and eliminate legacy issues with the move to S/4HANA

In the course of the change, businesses should standardize their logistics and supply chain processes and harmonize their IT landscape. Harmonization is of interest from an economic standpoint as businesses tend to have fragmented, decentralized systems and process landscapes that are outdated resulting from successive migrations and process or IT overhauls. The aim is to reduce this complexity by eliminating legacy issues and creating a digital core that is prepared for a future business environment with the Internet of Things, cross-business supply chain networking using standardized application programming interfaces (APIs), artificial intelligence (AI) and automation – and is open to net-working in the cloud.
